I love puzzle games of all kinds. Whether it's a drop-down puzzle game like Tetris, or the likes of Picross which involves unveiling a hidden image by marking squares within a grid; and then there's Piczle Lines DX!
What is Piczle Lines DX?
If you're unfamiliar with 'Piczle Lines DX' then you're missing out on a great puzzle game. 'Piczle Lines DX' requires the player to discover a hidden picture by correctly joining two coloured numbers of the same value together. For example, two yellow 7's must be joined by forming a line across 7 pixels or squares. The shape of the line will not always be the same, although some recurring patterns will occur. You cannot join two numbers of different values or colours; a pink 3 must be joined to a pink 3 and a blue 5 to a blue 5. Each number stands for the number of pixels or squares the line has to cover.
Regarding difficulty, the game ranges from easy to difficult. Smaller puzzles are relatively easy to solve, but things become trickier while tackling larger puzzles and numbers. Larger puzzles conceal more detailed images, which means at times, there will be numerous numbers of the same colour and value nearby. When such situations arise, players must experiment by attempting possible solutions until finding the correct one. There are times when its possible to think you're making significant progress, perhaps even on the verge of finishing a puzzle, only to discover you've done it wrong near the end.
This amounts to a fantastic puzzle game that deserves to be on Nintendo Switch. It's like a dot to dot picture in puzzle form! Being someone that lacks artistic talent, I love seeing how simple lines can form intricate pixel based images. It's addictive and fun.
How many Puzzles?
There are 500 puzzles, which are spread over 25 different categories. The categories include subjects like fun & games, sports, media, big bellies, and hobbies. Puzzle sizes range from 18×18 to 128×128. As expected, the smaller they are the easier they are to complete. 128×128 puzzles require a lot more thought, patience, time, and trial and error.
So what else is new?
In short, absolutely nothing, at least in terms of gameplay! 'Piczle Lines DX: 500 More Puzzles' is simply that. If you're expecting an upgrade in both graphical and sound departments, then you'll be disappointed. However, if you're looking for more addictive Piczle Line puzzles, then this new release gives you 500 reasons to buy it! And even though the game doesn't feature a story mode, it does feature 25 'one colour' puzzles and a small additional section that includes pictures and information about the game's development process.
Additional Comments
Since writing the above, I've been able to try some 'one colour' puzzles, and even though they provide an additional challenge, they detract somewhat from the main objective which is to unveil hidden pictures. One colour puzzles result in a grid filled with one solid colour. This is fine but detracts a little from the basic idea behind Piczle Lines. Unveiling the picture behind the puzzle is what drives you to finish each challenge, and so solving 'one colour' puzzles can feel a little anti-climatic. However, this slight gripe hasn't ruined my overall enjoyment of the game, and some will probably disagree with me. Personal preference is a beautiful thing.
Overall
Piczle Lines remains one of the best puzzle games for Switch. This particular package contains hundreds of puzzles which will keep players busy for a long period of time. Also, it's important to note that this game is more approachable for newbies than the likes of Picross. Picross can seem daunting to newcomers, but Piczle lines is so simple to pick up that even my children can play it.
I'm happy to give this title an 'I like it a lot' award.
